Collection: Get started painting miniatures
In this collection we gathered everything we believe is required to help you start painting miniature models!
Naturally the first thing to look for is a primer, which will act as a foundation for your paintwork by providing a better surface for paint to adhere to.
Once we get to painting itself, nothing is more important than the brush you use! Our recommendation here is natural hair kolinsky paintbrushes. Roubloff Miniature K2 is a flat-tipped brush that's perfect for putting on base colours, but for doing detail we advice to go for a round brush like Roubloff Miniature K1 or 1015.
Many beginners tend to default to tiny size 1, 0 or even 00 brushes and use them for everything they do, thinking a tiny brush will lead to a neater result... We actually consider this something of a "newbie trap" and recommend that you start with a decently sized brush, like size 1.5 or size 2! What's most important to do detail is actually just the tip, which high quality brushes like Roubloff's kolinsky are perfectly able to maintain. A properly sized brush will also cover more area per stroke, leading to overall less strokes and smoother looking final surface.
And don't forget some brush soap!!! Properly cleaning your brushes after use only takes about two minutes and will ensure they serve you for years, before they finally wear down and lose their tip.
Next, we need to get some paints, and for that the fastest way to go is to just grab one of the paint sets we have in stock! But do make sure to also browse our full ranges of Vallejo Game Color and Two Thin Coats paints for colours that fit your project.
A separate mention goes to two base colours that any artwork will involve is some fashion - black and white. For these two we have our own favourite picks that we want to recommend. Ionic's Black comes in a hearty 20ml bottle and features a smooth, matte finish while keeping a nice black colour, while Two Thin Coats' White Star is the smoothest and best-covering white we've encountered across all paint ranges we used.
Finally, consider supplementing your paint sets with an appropriate wash to quickly and easily add some depth to your model.
